así es crecer en ruzafa

For a few years now, Ruzafa has established as one of the most trendy neighborhoods in the city of Valencia: bars, clubs, clothing stores and vintage objects are going through a dangerous process of gentrification, with many rental houses for tourism and a huge leisure offer.

Until the 1970s the new neighborhood tripled its population, moment in which the loss of population began due, among other things, to the closure of the small business and the transfer of its inhabitants to the new peripheral neighborhoods, with larger and more modern houses. Throughout the 90s, Ruzafa established itself as one of Valencia’s immigration neighborhoods. This new situation accentuated problems such as the lack of public equipment (schools, health centers, parks, etc.) and the lack of investment that the neighborhood had been suffering for a long time.

A somewhat less extensive but important flow of young students and professionals from the artistic world began to feel attracted by the centrality of the neighborhood, and its «authentic» multicultural character, which perhaps caused the neighborhood to become trendy.

Since 2007, Ruzafa has become the center of one of the most ambitious redevelopment plans implemented by the town council in recent years. This former neighborhood of merchants and artisans is today the trendy multicultural neighborhood for tourists and citizens: a focus of cultural and artistic creation, a reference in the city. This gentrification process has caused the exclusion of lifelong neighbors. The breakdown of local businesses, the privatization of public space and the saturation of hotels have been accentuated.

Housing has risen 40% since 2014, and some residents have been expelled from the buildings in which they lived. With all this information, we wanted to get closer to the neighborhood and explore what it is like to be young here.
